Jackie Robinson Day!

Today 61 years ago the game of baseball was forever changed. I read in a book titled "How to be like Jackie Robinson" a story about what happened before the greatest day in baseball. So here is the story...

Mr. Robinson played baseball professionally in the Negro Leagues. (At the time, the sport was segregated, and African Americans and whites played in separate leagues.) Robinson, however, was chosen by Branch Rickey , a vice president with the Brooklyn Dodgers, to help integrate major league baseball. This is were the story really begins.

Mr. Rickey had asked the Brooklyn Dodgers General Manager (or someone like that) to meet with Jackie and get him to talk to Mr. Rickey, the GM (or whoever) asked Jackie several times to meet with the Dodgers. He even told Jackie that he would get on the train with him to meet Mr. Rickey (Jackie was nervous about that) but agreed to get on a train and meet Mr. Rickey.

When Jackie got to the front office the Dodgers secretary showed him were Mr. Rickey's office was, Jackie then walked in and this is what Jackie heard from Mr. Rickey... (For those of you who hate racism the language is a bit graphic so I will clean it up and you can fill in the blank)

..."Aw yes sit down N*" Jackie had heard this before and reluctantly sat down. He then looked at this man and said "Sir what can I do for you?" "This is why N*..." Mr. Rickey then began using every racist term in the books, while Jackie just sat there. Then Mr. Rickey looked at Jackie pulled him out of his chair and began shaking his hand he then said with tears running down his cheeks "Oh Mr. Robinson! I am so sorry! I just wanted to see what you would do!! I know now that I picked the right man!"

A stunned Jackie looked at him and said "I am sorry I just do not understand." Mr. Rickey then began to explain his crazy idea to change baseball and America forever. Jackie then said something like "Mr. Rickey I do not know if you realized but I am just a simple Negro man what can I do?" (I am trying to remember word for word what was said with its authenticity so if I miss quoted something or something please go read the book it is amazing.)

Mr. Rickey said something along the lines of "That is why I want you. Because you ignored what I said to you when you walked in." ; and that is the story within the story. So I hope you enjoyed it.

Thanks Mr. Robinson for turning the other cheek and changing my favorite game!

UGH! THE ASTROS!!!..going to vent...AGAIN

14 games into the season and the record is...drum roll please...5 and 9. That's right kids 5 wins and 9 loses! So on that note here are some stats for you all to enjoy! (Just proof that the 2 former Astros players I mention should have stayed Astros!) If you need help with the lingo just shoot me a comment.

I know this is just the beginning of baseball season...But just look at the stats! The Astros new closer is a joke! Sure he had a great season last year, but it is 2008 and he has blown almost every game he has pitched for the Astros!

I guess it just serves Uncle Drayton and Uncle Ed right because this is the team they put together. Right? I still love the two guys who are gone to different teams and am very proud they are doing well. However I am not liking the 'Stros new closer to much, especially after tonights game! After Chacon goes 8 innings and gives up 4 hits and 2 walks, he leaves and then the 'Stros new closer blows it with 4 runs in the bottom of the 9th. Oh how it is going to be one VERY LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONG season!

TAXES!!!..and other things.

Today is April 15th which means Taxes are do! Yeah!...NOT! This is my first year in paying taxes and let me tell you it is a little nerve recking! Now I understand why my dad gets excited when he finishes them. Please pray that all goes well with me and my taxes.

The other things... I am still trying to find a job and have had no success so please keep me in your prayers. Also I am going to be traveling soon (for those who know me, you know where and when) so please keep me in your prayers for that also.

That is 2 in a row!...

In honor of the Astros winning 2 in a row I have decided to quote 1 of my all time favorite movies Major League II...

Lou Brown (the Indians manager has entered the Clubhouse)
"Alright guys lets listen up! You Guy won one yesterday! You win one today that is 2 in a row! You win one tomorrow that is called a winning streak it has happened before! So I want to see some hustle! I got a feeling things are going to turn around for us..."

That is all! Go Astros!!! Also Go Red Sox!!!

Stephanie Dan In Real Life...and other things...

Today my younger sister and I were in between a fight and she yelled "Alright Stephanie Dan!" she was trying to pronounce my middle name which happens to be Deann, my mom then said referring to the movie Dan in real life "It's Stephanie Dan in real life!"

I am going crazy!...Well sot of. I am just still really upset about baseball season! Ugh! That is all!

3 and 6...An Astros post...I am going to vent...

3 and 6, what a wonderful record...If the Astros were the RAYS! I know it is ONLY the 2nd week of baseball but I mean come on 3and 6? The worst part is this is the team that Uncle Drayton and Uncle Ed wanted!

3 and 6 What a joke! I mean I know that this team has a better record so far than that of the 2007 Astros who went 1 and 6 in their first 2 weeks. But I still am not so thrilled about this team and really do not like the Astros right now.

Do you want to know why? (Guess what you get to read it anyway!) Because this is the same thing Uncle Drayton did in the past. He goes from one extreme to the next when the Astros do not get to the playoffs and win the World Series.

If because I am fed up and hurt because so many of the players I loved were traded from so many years gone by along with last year makes me a fair weathered fan than so be it. That is what I am.

But to those of you who read this and say "Yes you are a fair weathered fan!" Just remember I have friends who are Astros and they understand why I am upset and do not want to support Uncle Drayton and Uncle Ed.

There I am done. I will get off my soap box now!

Baseball season...

In honor of it being the official day of baseball I am posting one of my favorite commercial lines of the Red Sox..."I pledge allegiance, to the fans, of the entire Red Sox nation. And to the Fenway Faithful, in all the stands, one team, under Terry, with Offense and Pitching PLAY BALL!!!!!!!"
